Officer Jason Drummond and Officer Randy Jokela

Alejandro Lucero spent years as a homeless heroin addict in downtown Seattle – racking up six felony convictions before the age of 30. Alejandro describes that every waking hour of his life he, “was either trying to get drugs or using drugs.”

Officers Jason Drummond and Randy Jokela knew Alejandro well due to his many arrests. Alejandro believes his escape from a life of addiction came when Jokela and Drummond arrested him for stealing. He spent 54 days in jail, and when he finally got out and was sober, he had a moment of clarity. He says he will always remember February 2, 2015 as the day he got clean.

Before his recovery, Alejandro says he felt shame and couldn’t even look Officers Jokela and Drummond in the eyes. He says without his arrest or intervention by Jokela and Drummond, he would be dead or in prison. “If it wasn’t for you guys I wouldn’t be here. You guys did for me what I couldn’t do for myself.”

Today, Alejandro has a full-time job, a newborn son, and has been clean and sober for more than two years. He attributes his new life to Jokela and Drummond, who Alejandro says helped put him on the right track.
