Seattle Police Detective John Lewitt found a way to put some unwanted furniture from the University of Washington to good use.

Lewitt convinced the UW to donate left over dorm furniture from McCarty Hall, which is set to be demolished later this year.

On Saturday, volunteers loaded up trucks with hundreds of desks, bed frames and bookshelves. The donation will go to rehab facilities, women's shelters and other non-profit organizations both here and abroad.

One shipment is headed to a homeless shelter and orphanage in Ukraine.

“The east Ukraine is still in the worst situation,” said volunteer Angela Karelina. “Some people escaped with just the clothes they were wearing. They lost everything.”

Several companies donated dollies and trucks for the move.

The Seattle Police Officers' Guild also helped cover some of the costs.
