Beyond the Badge

Seattle Police Officers do more than serve our city while on-duty, but they are an ever present feature in our communities even off duty. One particular project the Seattle Police Foundation was thrilled to support was SPD Detective “Cookie” Bouldin’s Urban Youth Chess Club. Det. Cookie’s lessons in chess went beyond the chess board – she lead these leaders of tomorrow in anti-violence initiatives and taught them leadership skills.

One young student noted that, "your program and previous programs have improved me and my ways of action. You are truly a GREAT role model and amazing woman

The kids demonstrated their leadership abilities by organizing a successful chess tournament at the Rainier Vista Boys and Girls Club. "I want the teens to be thinking about their future, to judge people and police for who they are as a person, not to judge a book by its cover", said Det. Cookie.

The Foundation's work with officers like Det. Cookie is just one project SPF undertakes every day. In the coming year, SPF will continue to support the kinds of projects that improve the Seattle Police Department - keeping those on the front line safe, our friends and neighbors safe, and bringing the community closer together.
